Hi, Larry Tegtmeyer

Larry, I live in Champaign County, about ten miles from the city of Champaign.  The "pond" is located in our subdivision.  I’ve lived here for 31 years after retiring from the U. S. Air Force.

There are a few other places to fish around here but require from 1 hour to 2 hours travel to get to them.  One place that I go to has bluegill in the 10" to 11" range but it’s nearly a two hour drive to get to it.  I will go there again this year more frequently since gas prices have lowered.  There’s no more fun than catching a couple of dozen big bluegill on a fly rod.  Good luck.

Waiting to heal and waiting for Spring

I had surgery done on my left foot, two toes, and I’m hoping to be ready for fishing in March.  Meanwhile, I’ve been cleaning my tackle and changing lines.  In addition I’ve purchased some new lures for fly fishing for bass and crappie.  Many of them are streamers for getting the fish that are down deeper.  I haven’t used streamers for a very long time; not since my last trout fishing trip anyway.  But, I thought why not for bass and crappie and maybe some bluegill and red ear too.  As you can see, I do try to experiment and maybe solve some problems when surface fishing is slow with the fly rod.  If fly fishing is slow I usually switch to spinning or bait casting.  This year I’ll try to stick with the fly rod a little longer and see what happens.  I’ll be sure to let you know one way or the other.   I’ve also learned some new knots.  The web has a bunch of sites on fly fishing, fishing videos on the basics of fly fishing, and a multitude of other fly fishing sites.  I had my best friend, Ivan, over last week to view some of the videos.  You may recall he’s a novice on fly fishing and he found them very helpful.  When we get back to getting on the water and a little practice beforehand he will do better this year and improve on catching as well.  If you want to see the videos go to Google, u-tube, fly fishing, and scroll down to fly fishing videos.  There’s more than one site but the one I found best was "tight lines fly fishing".  Well, that’s it for now.
